East of Houshi near the Sea of Japan lies Mount Hakusan, considered one of Japan’s Three Sacred Mountains since ancient times. It was there that the world’s oldest hotel and first hot springs spa was built.
Legend has it that Awazu Onsen was founded by the great monk Taicho Daishi. This one day climbed Mount Hakusan, and since the trek was hard and age was old he decided to rest. In a dream, the god of the mountain appeared to him and told him that he had a gift for the locals. In the nearby village of Awazu there are underground hot springs that heal and regenerate, but they have to be reached. Daishi decided to test the prophetic dream and found the healing springs. This gave rise to the world’s first spa, managed by the monk’s disciple ? Garyo Hoshi. The holy water according to the story was supposed to have healing properties, soothing wounds and curing from human diseases and weaknesses.
A family business for 46 generations.
The family-run Houshi Hotel, now in its 46th generation, had humble beginnings as a spa, but first-generation owner Zengoro believed that Houshi should become a true inn with hot springs to soothe both body and mind. The legend has been passed down from generation to generation, beginning with the first touch of the hot springs 1,300 years ago and continuing as the Houshi Hotel to this day. Since the beginning of the first hotels, both their function and importance have changed quite a lot. Inns on the tracts received travelers and traders traversing the trails and a stay there was mainly for warm food, lodging in safe conditions and watering the horses.
